A Morsel of Bread

Festivals, fairs, banquets, receptions, gatherings, have a couple of things in common, people and food.  Oh, and don’t forget laughter, fellowship, and fun!  Throughout history we read of celebratory feast, Thanksgiving meal, the infamous story of the father who killed the fatted calf to display his joy and satisfaction of his returning son. “bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry”.

Merry is a wonderful word and if you think about it, it is what we are all striving for on a day-to-day basis.  We work to make money to have a nice things and to be able to pay for exclusive sports shows on TV so people will come to your home and be MERRY!  If we do not have the funds to attend gatherings or we are weighted down in debt with no foreseen way of getting out we are NOT merry so we desire in our hearts to be merry.

Sometimes we are not merry for other reasons.

I came home from work one day, I opened the door and as I stepped in, I found a hand written note in the floor from my husband telling me he had left, actually moved out, he was gone! Gone like a freight train gone like yesterday.  (I love music)

Oh my!  I was beyond awe struck and not in a good way.  The emotions that flooded my body cannot be put into words.  Needless to say, I was NOT merry and for the next couple of years I strived to put joy and true laughter back into my heart.  The rest of that story is for another time.

So, it appears as humans, WE LIKE TO EAT!  Every gathering has food. But what if you are in that place where being around anyone is not a good idea.  You are depressed, stressed, exhausted or just worn out.  The word of God tells us numerous things to help in these times of trouble, but I am going to stick to one.

FOOD!  I love good food and I cannot lie….

I have struggled with weight, being the weight I wanted, since I was 14 and I have worked hard in the past with pictures on my refrigerator, hiding chocolate for an incase moment, and starving so I could eat a GOOD meal later.  I just didn’t understand WHY I liked bread more than anything.  I would shop at Albertson and as a treat to myself I would buy the large French loaf that was piping hot with steam, and a Pepsi (remember I had not eaten knowing I was going to do this) 😊 and as I drove home, by myself, I would eat the middle out of the loaf and the first drink of Pepsi was delightful and “Voila” I WAS MERRY!

As I study the Bible – it is amazing to me that the Word of God has covered everything for us.  He loves us and it even explains why I found such pleasure in that few moments driving home with my bread.

When the Lord appeared to Abraham in Genesis 18, The Lord had three men with him and Abraham said let me fetch you a morsel of bread and comfort your hearts.

Saul had disobeyed the Lord and Saul’s handmaiden saw there was no strength in him and asked, let me set a morsel of bread before you and eat so you will have strength.

When Elijah was at the gates, he asked a widow woman to bring him a morsel of bread.

And one of my favorites is Boaz said unto Ruth, at mealtime come here and eat of the bread and dip your morsel in the vinegar, she did and was satisfied. He took her out to dinner of sorts.  Her bread wasn’t dry……and you know the rest of the story.

These stories tell us we DO need comforted, and one way of comfort is taking a morsel of bread and enjoying a meal.

Morsel – a bite or a small piece of food, a meal.

The devil used bread as a way to try and push Jesus’ buttons –  he said to Jesus, “if you are the Son of God, command this stone to be made bread”  This was after Jesus had been without food for forty days.

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Learning how to use the Word of God, yes, I said use.  It was written for our use, your prayers will break old cycles from your life, meet new people, upgrade your pay and it gives you the desires of your heart.

Let’s not forget this one: The Breaking of Bread

And Jesus took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Jesus was known for breaking bread and he would love to break bread with you.

I realized it wasn’t so much the food or bread I was consuming as it was the sense of satisfaction I received when my tummy was full and I felt peaceful, it was taking a little time alone for myself.  In Him I live and breathe and have my being.

So no matter your circumstance – take time to receive a morsel of bread giving Thanksgiving to the Father and He will make you MERRY!

Prayer for yourself, pray out loud taking heed unto thyself as the word tells us.

Father, in the name of Jesus I praise you and thankyou for your son Jesus and thank you Jesus for being my Savior and giving us the Holy Ghost, thank you Holy Ghost for being my great teacher and my guide.  You created the heaven and earth, the great whales and every living creature that moves.

You created me in your own image. I know my situation isn’t great right now BUT I believe in you and acknowledge your power and might.  I delight in your ways and because I meditate on your word I am like a tree planted by the rivers of water that bring forth fruit in season and my leaf doesn’t wither and whatsoever I do will prosper.

I praise you with my whole heart and all your marvelous works. I cry out to you with my voice and you hear me.  You sustain me and I am not afraid.  You deliver my soul and restore my soul.  I put my trust in you, I rejoice and shout for joy because you defend me, you and your presence is fulness of joy.  At your right hand is pleasures for evermore and I am in you.

In Jesus Name I pray, AMEN!
